South Carolina defeats AuburnAfter controlling the game for the first half, and playing well enough for most of the 2nd, Auburn suffered a complete collapse with about 7 minutes remaining; insuring a gamecock victory.

Auburn’s loss sent them tumbling to last place (alongside Alabama) in the SEC West. It now appears that, barring some unlikely scenarios (most of which involve Auburn winning out), Auburn will finish seeded either 5th or 6th in the West. And, if you read my previous article, that’s just fine with me, since it avoids Auburn finishing in the dreaded 4th seed (thus playing in the Tournament’s first game).

After a few hours of researching the 128 possible outcomes of Alabama, Auburn, LSU, and Ole Miss’s final games, here’s the number of possible outcomes:

  • there are 14 ways Auburn finishes 3rd (10.94%)
  • there are 28 ways Auburn finishes 4th (21.88%)
  • there are 42 ways Auburn finishes 5th (32.81%)
  • there are 44 ways Auburn finishes 6th (34.38%)
  • As you can see, over 2/3rds of the outcomes put Auburn at 5th or 6th. However, of the 5th-place finishes, nearly 55% are predicated on Auburn winning their final game at Arkansas. Since this is highly unlikely, I’m ready to go ahead and predict that Auburn will finish 6th. Which means Auburn would play either Kentucky, Vandy (most likely), or Florida at 3:15, Thursday.
