We just got back home, so I’ve had almost 2 days to process the season kickoff vs. La. Tech. Obviously, getting the win was the most important thing - so, check that off. Next, we wanted to restore confidence in the program and the coaching staff - again, check. After that, Auburn had to show serious improvement on offense; particularly at quarterback - 3rd check in a row. Awesome!
Now the bad news: Auburn’s defense. What happened? During Tubberville’s tenure, you could always count on Auburn fielding a “sure-’nuff” defense (regardless of the offense). But on Saturday, Auburn’s defense looked downright average. La. Tech seemed to be picking up 1st downs at will - and mostly by running the ball! I read somewhere that a couple of Auburn starters were missing Saturday, but come on. There’s no way La Tech should have gained over 150 yards (all-purpose) in the first half. I’m more than a little worried about facing the tougher, deeper, SEC-level running games down the road. Hopefully, things will improve. If not, look for Auburn to get into some scoring track meets - which historically haven’t been Auburn’s forte.
Overall, it was still a nice win. The highlight was definitly the Todd to Zachery, 92 yard pass. It was beautiful. The best part about it was that the previous play had been essentially the same, except Todd almost threw a pick-6. Then, as the next play developed, the corner and safety both jumped in front to intercept… expect this time, Todd pumped, leaving the defense flat-footed as Zachery streaked down the sideline for the catch and an easy 6.
It was a fun day of football. As usual, I was a crowd favorite; getting my photo snapped with over a hundred different fans throughout the day. It was a great way to start the season and I can’t wait until next week vs. Miss. State. See ya there.
War Eagle!
